Sen is a shrubby plant about 40 to 90 cm high, it is native to Arabia and Somalia, and is also cultivated in southern India. It is traditionally used as a natural laxative for occasional uses, because increases the bowel movements speed and fluids secretions from the colon. Its consumption helps to prevent the flatulence. It is effective in detoxifying the body.
The active components of senna pass through the stomach and the small intestine without being absorbed, reaching the colon without any alteration. There, they are hydrolyzed and transformed into the corresponding active metabolites with the help of the enzymes founded in the intestinal flora. When this occurs, there is an increase of intestinal peristalsis (a series of organized muscles contractions that move the food along the digestive tract) as well as the secretion of water and electrolytes into the intestinal lumen, thus producing the laxative effect.
